Artist's Comments
It seems most every time I go outside I find an interesting critter to photograph. This time it's a wheel bug, which is classified as a True Bug and is related to the assassin bug and the conenose. Unlike the other insects I've recently photographed, this fellow was NOT a good model! He couldn't sit still for more than a second, so most of my shots were blurred and I had to take about a dozen before I finally captured this nice close-up. Getting a closeup like this was a messy business due to the bug's energetic behavior. I tried to get in front of him with the camera a couple times hoping to stop his movement, but he just kept coming, grabbed the camera lens, and crawled all over it. I didn't want to have to handle him because he carries a nasty-looking dagger and I've already had the pleasure of having my hand stabbed by his cousin the assassin bug. So, I just had to wait until this guy slowed down long enough that I could come in for the kill...er, I mean to take the shot. I'm pretty satisfied with the result.
